Class Descriptions

Air Steps

YEP, this is an aerials class. We plan to try and cover a very basic lift then move to something a bit more dynamic. Pants or shorts are recommended for this class as we do plan on getting you, inverted. Note: We will not rotate partners in this class.

Balboa at its Best

Jeff & Heidi start your day right with some awesome balboa’ness. That all you need to know about that!

Balboa Basics

Balboa goodness from Jeff & Heidi. What level is this class? Good question. The answer is YOUR level! That’s right, YOU! The person reading this right now! It is at YOUR level! Isn’t that amazing!!?

Cha-Cha

The cha-cha-chá, informally called cha-cha, is a 1950's dance of Cuban origin. The distinctive rhythm comes from the earlier danzon-mambo music of the 30s-40s. Guess what, The name of the dance is an onomatopoeia (!) derived from the shuffling sound of the dancers' feet when they dance the three consecutive quick steps that characterize the dance! Swing Dancers, we know you love to shuffle, so come learn this shuffle dance!

Guided Nature Walk

Shake out the kinks from the long ride and get to know our beautiful facility a little better during this 1 hour guided hike with The Woodlands' certified Naturalist Jeanne Coleman!

As you discover the wild lands of The Woodlands, Jeanne can share a wealth of information about Redwood Forest Ecology, Logging History, Salmon Life Cycle, Native American Plant Uses, Birds of the North Coast, and MORE!

Be sure to bring your camera, and wear whatever you consider your most appropriate attire - we want to see YOUR photos!

Hand-to-Hand Charleston

Intermediate+ - must already know basic Charleston:

Kirk and Iris are going to take you on an amazingly fun journey through hand-to-hand Charleston - from improving your technique with this fun, stretchy move to learning variations with fun breaks turns. They are planning to throw a lot of variations at you so be ready to sweat!

Jazz Hop

A solo class integrating early jazz moves like suzy Q and charleston into a hip hop routine inspired by Kendra J Hornsburgh's choreography for Jungle's video for Busy Earnin'. The combinations will give you a sense of how you can get creative in your partner dancing with classic steps. All levels welcome.

JeweLry Making

What it sounds like. Come drink some wine and make some earrings.

Jig Walks

Stuck at a wedding or office party? Music too fast to think? Exhausted from the last jam? Need one versatile move for all occasions? This 6-count basic will save you when in all sorts of hot water! This is the LBD of swing! What a great way to start off the weekend.

More Shag

This is a great class for those who are comfortable with basic Shag footwork as well as for those who took the Basic Shag class. We will introduce some new steps as well as cover more styling detail on some that were introduced in the basic class. NOTE: if you are comfortable with basic steps you are not required to take Basic Shag before this class.

Moves Every Lindy Hopper Should Know

Iris and Kirk will be teaching some of their favorite Lindy Hop moves - classics from Frankie Manning and other legendary dancers - that every Lindy Hopper should know!

Intermediate+ (should be comfortable with basic 8-count and 6-count movements including swingouts)

Pass-By Mania

The world is your oyster when it comes to pass-bys! Join Kirk and Iris to learn a bunch of fun variations to take your social dancing to the next level. Learn the moves while also learning the technique behind Leading and Following them. Plus, Follows will learn how to "take the Lead" in the middle of a pass-by and Leads will learn to "listen."

Salsa

After the Lindy Hop, what did New York City give the world? Mambo!... and then Salsa! Learn the connection fundamentals and unique body dynamics of this wildly popular international dance.

Shag Basics

For those looking to have a go at learning the fundamentals of Collegiate Shag or those with some experience looking to get more comfortable, this would be a great class for you. We will teach the basics regarding partner connection footwork, and drill these through a pattern of moves that we will continue to build on in The “More Shag” class.

Tap Shim Sham

All levels: Learn the tap version of Leonard Reed’s Shim Sham! The Shim Sham is danced at Lindy Hop venues around the world. This solo jazz line dance has been danced in different forms since the 1920s and was popularized by Frankie Manning in the 1980s as the resurgence of Lindy Hop was happening.

Slow Bal

Slow Balboa, a.k.a. the Laminu, is really a dance all to itself. If you are not a blues dancer, but still want to dance to slower tempos, here’s a wonderful dance you can do in front of your grandparents that will not make them blush.

Solo Charleston

Who needs a partner anyway? Come dance, laugh and learn some basic Charleston moves you can show off on the dance floor. You will be pleasantly surprised that you can dance all by yourself and not have to depend on someone else to itch that dancing desire!

Spinning - Off The Dance Floor

Would you like to learn to spin -straw- wool into -gold- yarn?

This workshop begins with an explanation of the materials: sheep’s wool that’s been processed for spinning, and the simple ancient technology (drop spindles) used to turn it into stable yarn.

If you’ve never made yarn before, or if you enjoy spinning on a wheel but would like to learn on a drop spindle, or you’re somewhere in between, this class is for you.

Each student will get wool to spin, a spindle to borrow for the duration of camp, and help creating a useable sample of hand-spun yarn.

Topics:

  • Meet the wool

  • Drafting and adding twist

  • Meet the spindle

  • “Park and Draft” method of spinning

  • Winding on

  • Joining new wool

  • Plying

  • Finishing

Swing Out Bootcamp

What does it mean for a Swingout to "feel good?" How do you get the stretch and momentum needed to then spring back together and back again? Leads and Follows are both imperative for this to occur. Join Iris and Kirk as they take you through a Swingout bootcamp, to break down each movement within a Swingout so both roles understand where their bodies need to be every step of the way.

Switches and Swivels

Basic lindy prerequisite. Learn to swivel and switch like 40’s Fab diva Jewel McGowan.

Thriller

Learn the dance from Thriller and have fun performing as a zombie at the Variety Show.

Vintage Hair

Simple tricks for vintage hair for the hair-challenged. Bring your own hair.
